Much has changed about scientific writing since the third edition came out in 1996. Foremost, the pace at which we communicate ideas and results has increased dramatically. This fourth edition reflects that change. In addition, although this fourth edition still teaches how to write reports and articles, the book does so with an eye on the impatience of many readers. Much has also changed about the teaching of scientific writing. Twenty-two years ago, if I were to ask students to identify the subject of a sentence that begins with an infinitive phrase, about two-thirds would have been able to do so. Today, I am lucky if one-third of my students can. No doubt, students today are just as smart and hard working as they were in the past, but a misguided education movement in public schools has replaced the teaching of grammar with writing assignments that are more fun (such as first-person stories and "I believe" essays). In turn, many technical writing teachers in college (and managers in industry) have given up expecting young engineers and scientists to know what the subject of a sentence is or even what distinguishes a sentence from a run-on or fragment. I have not. You might call me old-fashioned, but I see a wonderful opportunity for young engineers and scientists to distinguish themselves through their writing. Although this book recognizes that the world is different in 2018, this book still pursues excellence in writing. Such excellence comes from crafting each idea into a precise and clear sentence, it comes from connecting those sentences into paragraphs, and it comes from maintaining energy by using strong verbs and by being concise. These skills require the writer understand the essence of grammar. For that reason, this book teaches that essence. Finally, much has changed about me. In teaching my ideas to hundreds of engineers, scientists, and technical professionals around the world, I have learned much. Many of the examples in this book have been analyzed by thousands of professionals. Their honest comments have shaped the advice in this book. Given that, I am not as brash as I was in my twenties and thirties. In turn, the advice of this fourth edition is more thoughtful than the advice of the 1996 edition. In conclusion, I have no doubt that you will learn much in reading the book, because I learned so much in writing it.

This is a really great book. It's very useful for preparing to write. It doesn't so much tell you what you need to include, so it's not a manual on what to write, but does a great job explaining how to get your message across in an effective way (major pitfalls to avoid, examples on how bad writing can be improved, etc).I definitely held on to this after the class was finished and I've gone back to it while working on my thesis.

I highly recommend this book for those of you who are inexperienced scientific writers. I am really struggling with scientific writing right now. Finding this book has been a blessing. It is very well written in that the language is simple and straighforward. Excellent examples are provided that have been very helpful for me such as: how to write using the active voice and first person (often frowned upon in scientific writing)effectively. I have had this book for about three months and it is already dog eared and filled with sticky notes. I am planning on ordering the e version as soon as I get my new kindle. This will decrease the weight of my bag since I carry it with me just about everywhere I go. I also think more experienced writers will benefit from this book. I have read many scientific articles by experts and some of them are very difficult to read due to unnecessarily long and complex sentences. This book gives some very good tips on how to keep sentences concise so that the complexity of the science can be better appreciated.

Great book. I was looking for it for a while.

This book is full of common sense, but it does a good job reminding the reader of the important things in technical writing. The book includes many good examples of each topic it goes over. I would recommend this book to to anyone in a technical field and should repeatedly refer back to this book during the length of a scientific career.

My grandson was please with it. He ordered it in hopes it would help him increase his knowledge of writing for papers that he needs to do in college.

The goal of writing in science is to communicate information. Unfortunately too many people in science, including myself, write in a manner that is little more than unintelligible. Having read this book, I now feel sorry for the people who had to read my work. Too much scientific literature is poorly crafted and it is only natural that newcomers try to science emulate this poor style.As a reader of scientific literature, I always though there was something wrong with me because I could not read the articles. I would get stuck on a passage and, no matter how hard I tried, I would not be able to get past it. Now I know that this is because the writing is poorly crafted.The Craft of Scientific Writing gives an appreciation of the flaws that we all make in our writing. There are plentiful examples of poor writing, which are contrasted with good writing styles. Also, the explanations are clear and easy to understand.Despite appearances, there is no rule, man-made or natural, that says that scientific writing cannot be clear, crisp and fluid. If you write any kind of scientific literature do yourself a favour and read this book. It will help you to become a better writer.

very easy to read, explains things in a real-life manner without all the big fancy wording that often is confusing. overall, great help with writing!

It is now helping me during my struggling PhD life.
