Most histories and biographies concentrate on the exceptionally successful. It’s refreshing to read an account by wide receiver/tight end Nate Jackson such as “Slow Getting Up”, who came out of a minor college program to survive a few injury-riddled years with two high-profile NFL franchises. For the reader who isn’t a hardcore NFL fan, the book is breezy and gives an honest portrait of both the physical costs of a pro football career and just how tenuous it is in terms of financial rewards. The physical costs are apparent – the portion of the book dedicated to Jackson’s hard work recovering from injuries is far longer than the account of actual game action. Jackson’s financial status isn’t covered in a comprehensive way but let’s just say that he isn’t a rich man now. In fact, the average NFL player has a career lasting three seasons, while Jackson had a 6-year long career, so he has been more successful than average. If you aren’t a star, this isn’t a lucrative profession. For the hardcore NFL fan –I am one - there are some very interesting details that come out of Jackson’s book, besides the human story:- It shows once again what a talented scout legendary 49ers head honcho Bill Walsh was. Walsh picked Jackson out of a minor college team and brought him on board to the 49ers as an undrafted free agent (i.e. the lowliest way to enter the NFL). Jackson proceeded to build a career as a combo WR/TE in the West Coast system run by the 49ers and a modified one run by the Mike Shanahan Broncos.- As such, Jackson was one ofthose fringe players that fill a particular role in a prominent coach’s roster building (in this case, Shanahan’s). Jackson was able to hold on to this job because he was both exceptionally professional and because Shanahan was a successful head coach who lasted a long time in Denver. Many players play similar roles for less successful coaches; they barely get the time to learn the playbook before they are out of the league. So Jackson was lucky!- Mike Shanahan always looks like he is about to burst an artery when on the sideline. It was very interesting to read about how well he ran the Broncos organization and how much he was liked by his colleagues, especially by veteran players with experience in different teams. “Slow Getting Up” raised my esteem for Shanahan considerably.- It did the opposite for Eric Mangini, the overpromoted one-time coach of the Jets and then the Browns. His 2009 training camp sounds like an insane asylum and explains why he has been unable to find a place in the NFL after the Browns fiasco.- Jackson’s account of the lead-up to the big 2005 AFC Championship game in Denver is incredibly interesting. This is the game in which the Bill Cowher-led Steelers came into Mile High and romped over the Broncos in a major upset, part of the Steelers championship run. Jackson, besieged by relatives all week long and unable to focus on the game, walked into the Broncos locker room prior to the game and immediately knew his team was going to lose, based on the body language of his teammates. Jackson also claims that he always knew whether the Broncos were going to win or lose in the locker room before the game.- Steroids: Or lack of them. After some public comments by ex-players pointing to widespread use of performance-enhancing drugs, I perked up when Jackson writes that he not only never used them during his NFL career but never saw anyone use them. It’s a notable data point.- Finally, Jackson’s comments about how after a couple of seasons he stopped listening to the position coaches and started watching the really successful players – in his case, the excellent vet WR Rod Smith – to learn how to play and practice. You always read about the importance of veteran leadership in NFL teams. Jackson’s well explains why.“Slow Getting Up” is a worthwhile, entertaining read for the NFL fan. I have marked it down to 4 stars because it is highly personal and doesn’t extrapolate from Jackson’s own experience at any point. But it’s better than the average NFL memoir.

If you are like me, then you read a few of the 5 star reviews and then read the 1 or 2 star reviews to see what the comparisons are. In this case, after having read the 1-2 star reviews I have to say - those people are idiots. They complain that it isn't juicy enough on the party details. Or maybe there is some swearing (OMG!). Or maybe it doesn't deal enough with the inner workings of the NFL...So here is the deal... It's about one guy. Nate Jackson, and what he went through. And it's honest. Nate doesn't try to pretend to know what it is like for other guys he just lays out what it was like for him. And yeah, he wasn't Shannon Sharpe - and that's the whole point. This is the story of a guy who actually played but was never celebrated. And it is an absolutely fascinating, honest, and engaging read of a man who dedicated his whole world to football. For me, I came away with a better understanding of how difficult and competitive the NFL is. What it's like to break into the starting line and the rewards that come with. And more so, what a man will do to keep at that level.Kudos Nate.

In 2000, the book "Kitchen Confidential" revealed one chef's thoughts on what it was like to be a chef. Not a celebrity chef featured on the Food Channel, but a working-class, sore-knees, burnt-fingers guy who lived life one plate at a time. It was a revealing, funny, profane look at the restaurant industry.Nate Jackson spent six years in the NFL. He was not a star, but he was part of the team. He was a working-class, sore-knees, broken fingers guy who lived life one season at a time. With this book, Jackson has written a revealing, funny, profane look at the day-to-day life of an NFL player.Talk about the NFL tends to focus on the stars - Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Adrian Peterson, etc. This book is a welcome reminder that there are 53 guys on each NFL team, and although not all of them are known by name, they endure training camp, take the routine abuse of regular season games and just do their jobs for their love of the game and our entertainment. Jackson chronicles the life of an NFL regular with no self-pity, amazing honesty and a wry sense of humor. If you love the NFL, you'll probably like this book.
