The maps are the guide's saving grace. Since the Internet has killed so many printed guides, options are limited, and this is probably still the best option out there, but there are many inaccuracies and omissions. The layout of the book and the maps are great and really helpful. Many of the descriptions are good and well-written, and they have included a lot of great recommendations on places to go. It's quite comprehensive as far as museums and tourist destinations and is better than a lot of other LP guides as far as shopping and eating recommendations. The size is just right for carrying around. But there are many shortcomings. Starting with the glaring omission of the T4 train to/from Barajas Airport into the city. The guide makes it seems like you have to make changes if you're going to Atocha station, but the T4 line goes direct to Atocha (and Chamartin) with no need to make a change at N. Ministerios. Though the book was just published in January 2016, by April a lot of prices were already out of date (example, admission prices to the major museums). The guide is also woefully inadequate to explain the logistics of day trips (e.g. El Escorial, Toledo), and one page maps of the day trip cities are anther woeful omission.
The guide itself is quite helpful. I appreciate the section on day trips from Madrid and also the little blurbs about where to find quick snacks while you adjust to the traditional Spanish eating schedule. However, the binding glue on my copy was very dry and cracked upon my first read-through. I’m embarking on a week-long trip after which I’ll likely ditch the book anyway, but I expect my guides to stand up to more wear and tear than just a preliminary read-through.
I'm using it in conjunction with the Rick Steeves guide and I found that the Lonely Planet goes beyond the usual "touristy" information and gives special attention to gay places to stay, and places to go out at night that are either gay friendly or gay establishments.
Excellent guide, was our savior on our recent trip to Madrid, until we lost it with one day left go to! The map was incredibly useful, it was marked up, tattered, frayed and well-used.
We are in Madrid right now and have depended on it for all kinds of pertinent information esp the restaurant recommendations . It is a great help.
