I read this book for my graphic novel class and for a free read Friday. It is very well done. I learned a lot about the aftermath of Hurrican Katrina in New Orleans, details I wasn't aware of before. Don Brown does a great job of presenting facts without a lot of bias. He uses facts and quotes to present the information. The illustrations are sepia toned and provide emotional details not given in the text. The faces are very expressive and even the way Brown draws the bodies shows how devastating the events were for the people of New Orleans.
I'm from New Orleans, had family here during the storm, and am now back. This book is gut-wrenching. I choked up several times while reading, and if I'd been reading it aloud I may have well lost it. This is an amazingly emotional and accurate account of what happened. That being said, as a teacher, I think this is the perfect book to educate our youth about the situation. I'd let my 8-year-old read it. She may be too young to have lived through that time period, but it's her family history now. Amazing book, Don Brown. "Well done" is too inadequate, but I'm left speechless.
This was assigned summer reading for my 11 year old son. I have not seen him so interested in reading a book (other than Diary of a Wimpy Kid)! The graphic novel format made it high-interest for him. He read it without nagging, and finished it in just a couple of days. I then read it myself and learned quite a bit! The book included lots of good information and seems very appealing for middle schoolers.
Using a graphic format, the author re-captures the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. The book's major emphasis is on the tremendous human suffering that resulted. Pictures showing people fleeing, drowning, stranded on rooftops, crowded into holding centers without food or water, etc. are unforgettable. The failure of governmental agencies to recognize the full extent of the problem and to take effective action is clearly documented. Powerful and overwhelmingly sad. It may be too grim for younger children.
Unique descriptions and pictures, describing a horrific event in US history. This book was engaging and informative. It captivated my 12 year old's attention and helped her understand the tragedies that took place during and after Hurricane Katrina. Older children (10+), teens and adults can all be engrossed in this book and it's unique format.
I just read this book to my 8 year old daughter who was rivetted from beginning to end. The narrative of this story is carried by the minimalist captions and the pictures that show just enough to allow you to see all of the rest. It is so easy to forget about how desperate the city of New Orleans became. This book really brought it home for myself and for my daughter. Bravo, Mr. Brown.
My 12 year old couldnt put this book down and he hates reading.Pictures are very detailed.Gives you a better understanding of what really happened and just how bad
Incredible book. Warning, it's sad and has some really sad pictures, but it's very good and I think people need to be reminded of what happened.
