In reading Avis' story you soon see it is not herself that she seeks to glorify or uplift, it is only the amazing, healing, restoring God she serves that she gives honor and praise too. Through her story she encourages the reader to look beyond the current circumstances of their situation and see how God is working through them. I encourage everyone to read Out of the Dust but not to stop with just that action. Once you have read Avis's story honestly ask God to show you what He is asking you to do, then jump in with both feet and allow God to write HIS story on your life.
All the proceeds from this book go directly to the orphanage and school...nothing goes to Avis. Since the first shovel of dirt was turned over, Avis has completely dedicated herself to bringing the vision God gave her to life....so much so, the she sold every possession she had (including her home) to help fund the vision. She is a hard working, dedicated, and self-giving person.
I enjoyed this look into a world I'm normally uncomfortable with. I'm not an Evangelical Christian, and the sad fact is the little time I've spent with Evangelical Christians has been deeply unpleasant. So, it was a particularly nice experience for me to be exposed to this positive and proactive portion of their movement. Within the space of this book I found common ground - a driving desire to help others, a deep love for Christ, the need and ability to take personal pain and use it to heal and help, and respect for those I would consider "other" (in my case, Evangelical or "right wing" Christians)It was clear that I was reading it as an outsider and there were aspects of the book I found a little difficult or even off putting, all of which I chose to see in the best light possible. For instance, there seems to be little, if any, consideration for the cultures these missionaries inject themselves into - but, the book wasn't about those cultures, it was about the missionaries and their work, much of which is genuinely life sustaining.It's not a book I'd recommend, but I am glad that I ran across (I would even accept that God brought it to my attention) it and chose to read it if for not other reason than it gave me hope to find more common ground in the future.

Great and beautiful story. Very empowering to women. I loved reading about a female religious leader. We don't have to be in the shadow of our husbands. Women can be great religious leaders.
I loved how Avis was honest enough about her own painful experiences that challenges all of us to not feel disqualified for ministry, but prepared. What a good outlook.
Loved reading how God worked in her life and the ways He provided. It encouraged me in my faith and inspired me broaden my impact for Him.
A story of a woman who boldly went where the Lord called her. As she says in the book: "I only knew how to go." And God uses her powerfully in the lives of people in Peru.
