A strange town, just a speck on the map, with an even stranger name - Wishing Bridge, New York. For Kelsey McCleary, this is reality, surreal as it feels. She turns off the interstate toward Wishing Bridge in order to find family. What happens next grants her wish in more ways than she could've thought possible.As at least two characters say, Welcome to Wishing Bridge has Hallmark movie written all over it. In fact, I wouldn't be at all shocked if the franchise snapped this up next Christmas to make a film. With that kind of endorsement, you might expect Wishing Bridge to be warm and fuzzy, but a little cheesy. I won't pretend the novel doesn't have its moments, but Ruth Logan Herne stays away from most cheesiness. Kelsey may look like a beleaguered single mom, but she's far more multifaceted than that. She's also smart, and blends natural compassion with a cynical edge honed by years in the foster care system. She wants to believe in prayers, wishes, and miracles, but freely admits life hasn't made that easy. She's made, and admits to, her share of mistakes, but even those aren't typical for a character of her description. She also doesn't fall back on a lot of clichés for this type of story, such as endlessly searching for biological parents or going through major angst when she realizes her family isn't what she thought it might be. Because of all this, I truly enjoyed spending time with Kelsey.I also got a real kick out of the secondary characters, who were refreshingly given enough development to become main characters in their own right. As you might guess, Thea and Jazz are my favorites, each painted with unique histories and struggles that make them who they are. Like Kelsey, they want to believe and have a healthy respect for faith, but unlike most stories of this kind, you don't get sugary conversions from them. All three women, Thea and Jazz in particular, are on real and relatable journeys, as are other characters, especially Hale. Like Kelsey's, his arc has some well-known elements - he's a single dad who lost custody of his son - but in many ways, Hale's journey isn't typical, nor are his actions. Again, that's about as refreshing as the first cold day after a humid summer.Being a fairly short, Christmas-set story, Wishing Bridge does fall back on a few clichés and classic writing problems like telling instead of showing in some places. About 70% of the way through, Kelsey finds out she has an enemy who looks like an upstanding community member but is petty, childish, and a stereotypical villain. I still wonder why this element was included, or why Ruth didn't take more time to develop it. Also, an awful lot of questions seemed not to get real answers until the last 30 or so pages, which in my opinion is a little late to wrap things up. But with all that said, the truth remains. I read about three quarters of this book in one day, because it's so enjoyable. What's atypical kept me interested, while what is typical kept me comfortable. Kudos to Ruth for achieving that balance. I definitely look forward to more Wishing Bridge books, and more like them from her.
I first fell in love with Ruth Herne's writing with her Double S Ranch series. Her incredible talent for bringing characters to life coupled with telling a story that tugs at both your heartstrings and soul is one of the best in the industry! She makes you fall in love with a town you wished you could actually visit & make your own and engulfs you in the story where reality fades away. You'll find yourself spending hours in the pages with no concept of time passing.Welcome to Wishing Bridge was another one of those type of stories that brought out all the emotions I love to feel and realistic characters I could easily call friends. Kelsey is a woman who finds herself in a bind; alone, scared, and her original plan taking an unexpected turn. With a snowstorm rescue by a handsome Deputy and the kindness of strangers she finds the strength to forge a new life even better then the one she had all laid out in her mind. Reunited with her best friends Jazz & Thea after an SOS call, they embark on an almost fairy tale Christmas story. Rife with heartache but handled with grace is my favorite way for a story to be told. Life is messy and nobody escapes it, it's in how you move forward and Ruth is a master at telling just that in her books. I loved everything about this, and especially the way she shows how strong a faith in God can be through Maggie & Jeb—the couple who take Kelsey into their home—in times of trouble. You won't meet a more gracious or loving couple, the hands and feet of Christ in action! Do I detect a bit of romance between Deputy Hale & Kelsey? That's sigh worthy stuff right there!You don't want to miss this one! Really, if you want a story to take you away to a place you could call home and characters to call your band of friends (aka The Soul Sisterhood) this is where to find it. Heartwarming stories with a deeper meaning, full of faith & love!
I won this story in a goodreads giveaway, and I am so glad I did. I have not read Ruth Logan Herne books before, but was delighted to find myself engrossed in the characters and community of Wishing Bridge. Kelsey is so courageous despite her mistakes and misfortune. With the help of a handsome deputy, her two dear friends, Thea and Jazz, (who come running when Kelsey calls in an emergency), and a town that is generous in action and faith, you have an endearing story that will leave you wanting more.
