This is a fantastic book. I’ve never met Nick in person but have interacted with him on various social media platforms. It’s an interesting experience reading stories where the other people being written about are people you actually know (via social media.) Nick seems like a regular guy and definitely someone I think I’d enjoy being friends with in real life. As a newer father and husband myself, I can relate to all of the family matters he discusses. If you have any interest in traditional bow hunting or just enjoy hunting stories, you’ll enjoy this book. It’s written in such a way that it’s easy to read, but in no way dumbed down. 5 stars.
This would be a great book for a teen to read to get them interested in traditional archery.
This book surprised me. I didn't know what to expect when I started reading it but it became hard to set down soon after. Nick 's journey is lot like the journey a lot of traditional bowhunters make put to words with the feeling that if we are honest we all experience at some point. Great book.
The title sums it up. One man's experiences on a quest for dominating a difficult skill set because it is hard, and rewarding.
Nick Viau's memoir chronicles his journey from somewhat random new hobby to a passion which becomes a lifestyle, and is captivating every step of the way. His refreshingly honest accounts of his mistakes and triumphs are relatable and his determination to succeed is enviable. So many authors fill their pages with self aggrandizing stories to show their superiority, while Nick goes out his way to keep it real and let you know he is just some guy who found niche and wants to share his passion for it. Whether its his (hopefully first of many) book or his blog, Nick Viau's writings and reflections are well worth your time. Do yourself a favor and buy this book, support one of the good guys, and thank me later...……...
I've read this book several times. Unlike many memoirs, Viau's avoids flowery language and long tangents into self - indulgence. His writing is solid and compact, and maybe this is going to far, but very much like Hemingway, with less bravado, and more heart. You'll find yourself, even if not a hunter, connecting with his experiences, and maybe even learning some of the lessons he learned through the sport of traditional longbow archery. A definite read.
Nick captures you with his writing style right away. Fantastic book, you won’t want to put this book down once you start it. As he tells the story of his journey into the world of traditional archery and his passion for the longbow, you will likely find his path parallels your own in many ways.I’ve heard many of these chapters around campfires, having them all bundled together makes for very entertaining reading. I banged out the first 13 chapters while sitting in a treestand hunting bears.
